Chamber spokeswoman Lorraine Reigosa confirmef that the event honoring Maidique woul take placeon Feb. 23. Maidique was the longest-serviny state university president in Underhis watch, FIU has growjn to more than 38,000 students and launched the Colleg e of Law, College of Engineering, Schoool of Architectures, College of Medicine and a Divisio 1A football team. Past Sand in My Shoes recipientss includeAdolfo Henriques, Sherwoode W. “Woody” Weiser, Jayne and Leonardf Abess, Jorge M. Perez and Carlos Arboleya. The chamber established its Sand In My Shoe s awardin 1981.
The award goes to a community leaderr who has made significant contributions to the South Floridwa area and has demonstrated a deep love and commitmentt to the community as the best possiblw place to workand live. The chambe r also announced Thursday that it will give its communityt service award toSteven E. Eisenberg, a special counsel at Jones Walker.
