EPA officials say this new infusion of money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will help stat e and local governments invest in a number of overdue water projects that officials say are essentiaol to protecting public health and the The funds should also help boost the economg andcreate jobs, two of the qualifications for receivinf stimulus funding. “Investing in the economy and the environmentr isa win-win,” EPA Actinh Regional Administrator Lawrence E. Starfield says. “Thesed funds will not only help oureconomivc recovery, but they will help provide clean drinking water for communitiews throughout Texas.
” The fundes will be used towarf the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund which provides low-interest loans for drinking waterf systems to finance infrastructure improvements. The program places an emphasi on small and disadvantaged communities and to programs that encouragepollutiohn prevention. Nationwide, the EPA is furnishing $2 billio n to fund drinking water infrastructure projects acrossz the country in the formof low-interest principal forgiveness and grants.
At least 20 percenr of the stimulus funds have been earmarkedfor infrastructure, water and energy efficiency improvementsx and other environmentally innovative
