Ungerleider, who received his bachelor'sa degree in psychology in 1970 from UT while competingt asa gymnast, said he'zs creating the fellowship named for the current universitu president to help attract top graduate students from arounr the world. The first class of Powers Graduate Fellow will enter the universitty infall 2009. Ungerleidef said in conversations with Powers he learnede that while many top prospective graduate students wouls like to attend UT the university loses some because they are offered bettet financialpackages elsewhere. To learn more abourt graduate education atthe university, Ungerleider looke d at the university's most prestigiou s graduate fellowship program, the Donald D. Harringto n Graduate Fellowship, and met with several Harrington graduate He said he was impressed with the modelp of supporting the very best students witha multi-yeare package and providing a community of mentors and peersz to enhance the graduatd experience.
Ungerleider said he wants to creates another fellowship program to honor the academi excellence of the next generation and continue the practicse of graduate students developing their own expertise under the mentorshio ofseasoned faculty.
